This Is Money: What drives you mad about going to the shops?
What drives you mad about going to the supermarket? Is it self-service tills, scanning receipts to get out, loyalty scheme dual pricing, or prices being hiked well above inflation? Many of us want to support bricks and mortar retail, but there are times when shops seem to mainly be involved in testing our patience. In a week in which the competition watchdog fired a broadside at the consumer brands giants for pushing up prices, a practice dubbed ‘greedflation’, and sounded a warning to Tesco and Sainsbury’s over Clubcard and Nectar Prices, the This is Money podcast team head down the shops. Georgie Frost, Lee Boyce and Simon Lambert discuss what’s good, what’s bad and what really gets their goat. Plus, will a new online fraud charter make any difference? The team discuss investing legend Charlie Munger and financial crisis Chancellor Alistair Darling, who both died last week. And finally, what makes a house price hotspot – we look at the UK’s top 30 this year.

This Is Money: Can you beat the April bill hikes - and is it time we ditched the tax traps?
Just when you thought the cost of living crisis was meant to be on its way out another round of bill hikes are hitting. From council tax to mobile bills, seemingly every organisation wants another piece of your bank account - and some of the rises are even higher than inflation. Is there anything you can do about it? Could a bit of switching, planning and another round of cutting back on energy usage, shave some money off? And is there light at the end of the tunnel? Georgie Frost, Helen Crane and Simon Lambert look at what's going up and how to fight it. Meanwhile, do you know how much tax you pay and are you in the firing line for Britain's worst tax traps? Ben Laidler of eToro delivers the latest update on the markets, after a much better week than the banking shakeout delivered last week. Plus — if you haven't done it yet, what can you do to sort your ISA?

This Is Money: Why is food inflation so high and when will it stop?
Inflation is theoretically running out of steam but there's one essential that's still gloing up in price rapidly: food. Even as energy prices and other recent highly inflationary items run out of steam, the cost of food seems to show no let up - with reports reporting inflation-busting rises. What is going on here? How much have food prices risen, why have they gone up so much, are supermarkets or brand-name makers profiteering, and will costs ever come back down? Georgie Frost, Angharad Carrick and Simon Lambert, delve into food prices on this week's episode - and look at any ways you could save money. Plus, mortgage rates are falling while the base rate is going up: why is that and what happens next? Should you invest in a VCT, not just for the juicy tax breaks but also for the investment opportunities on offer? And finally, we met the founders of Seatfrog to find out how they are helping passengers buy up unused first-class seats on trains at bargain prices and their plans for making train ticket-buying better.

But which will come out on top across a range of Christmas food and who delivered the cheapest bill? Simon Lambert and Lee Boyce take on Georgie Frost’s festive feast to find out in this week’s podcast and discuss whether the big supermarkets are doing better after some difficult years, if the rise of Aldi and Lidl will continue, and how Tesco and Sainsbury’s shares compare.

This is Money: What Goes Up...
Welcome to the This is Money and Share Radio podcast, brought to you in partnership with NS&I. This week we ask just how high the FTSE could go in 2017. With the New Year bull run still in full swing is now the time to invest or could the current record be too good to be true? Meanwhile the FTSE might be rising but the pound continues to slump to its lowest levels since the 2008 crisis. Good news for exporters at least whilst even Mark Carney’s admitting Brexit won’t be quite as bad for the country. So just where does all this leave the devaluing pound in your pocket? To find out Georgie Frost is joined by Editor Simon Lambert and Personal Finance Editor Rachel Rickard Straus. Also on this week’s agenda they look at the latest retail figures, Halifax’s statistics on first time buyers and the new powers allowing the tax man to spy on your online activity. This is Money: Christmas Taste Test
Welcome to the This is Money and Share Radio podcast, brought to you in partnership with NS&I. This week we’re getting festive with our annual Christmas taste test. Four retailers will be competing on cost and quality as we sample a full range of festive fare. Will last year’s champion Lidl hold its top place? Or will it fall victim to a resurgent Tesco? Also on trial this week we’ll have the upmarket option, Waitrose, and a mystery wildcard. Georgie Frost is joined by taste testers Editor Simon Lambert, Consumer Affairs editor Lee Boyce and special guest Development Editor Rich Browning. It’s not all eating though and as we delve into the financial stories of the day we’ll be serving up a starter of inflation forecasts, digging into a main course of mortgages and for pudding we’ll be rounding things off with a look at how the supermarkets have fared this year. This is Money: Spreading the Jam
Welcome to the This is Money and Share Radio podcast, presented in partnership with NS&I. This week of course the top financial story was Philip Hammond’s first, and indeed last, Autumn Statement. Just what state are the country’s post-Brexit finances in, and crucially what would the Chancellor offer to help his much referenced ‘Jams’? In the end those ‘just about managing’ certainly received a few headline policies but with predictions pointing towards low growth, high borrowing and high inflation many argue Jam spending has been spread too thin. There were also some losers with those enjoying salary sacrifice perks and letting agents coming into the crosshairs, as well as in fact the Autumn Statement itself which will now be scrapped. So what will all this mean for the pound in your pocket? Georgie Frost joins editor Simon Lambert and reporter Becky Rutt to answer just that. Also on the agenda this week they discuss Black Friday and for a slightly different purchase the opportunity to buy a road legal Formula 1 car. This is Money: Playing the Trump Card
Welcome to the This is Money and Share Radio podcast, presented in partnership with NS&I. It’s been a politically turbulent year, and this week the pollsters were proved wrong again as Donald Trump defied all odds to become 45th President of the United States. The billionaire real estate developer and TV personality with no political experience beat establishment favourite Hillary Clinton in one of the bitterest campaigns in history. With the markets swerving in all directions the eyes of the world are now on the United States waiting to see what a Trump presidency will bring. What will it mean for post-Brexit Britain? Despite Barrack Obama’s previous description of the UK being “at the back of the queue” Mr. Trump certainly appears more open to trade deals. Editor Simon Lambert and reporter Sarah Davidson join Georgie Frost to look at what could come of the shock victory and how it happened. Could being “a master of mess” be the key? That’s the theory being put forward by one economist. Also on this week’s show we look at the fallout from the Tesco Bank hack, the latest victims to rising food prices and how a wood burning stove could provide a cheaper way of keeping your home cosy this Christmas. This is Money: Is Marmitegate Toast?
Welcome to the This is Money and Share Radio podcast, presented in partnership with NS&I. This week, we're finally seeing the real-world of effect of Brexit: Marmite is gone from Tesco's shelves! Well, digital shelves at least, and it seems the supermarket giant and its main supplier Unilever have sorted out their differences for now, so you can rest easy. But if the battle is over for now, we can't be so sure about the war. As companies are squeezed from all sides by a falling pound and the soaring popularity of online delivery, can it lead to anything but higher prices at the checkout? Editor Simon Lambert and Consumer Affairs Editor Lee Boyce joined Georgie Frost this week to examine Marmite-gate, and see what it portends. They also took a look at Sterling's effect on holidaymaker's plans, the latest round of cuts at the beleaguered Lloyds, and what if anything we can know about housing prices in the future.
