The Financial Outlook for Personal Investors: What do investors do in response to inflation & interest rates?
With the Bank of England raising interest rates to 5% and inflation not just remaining stubbornly high but perhaps becoming ingrained, Danni Hewson talks to Simon Rose about what the future holds. Housebuilders, retailers and the hospitality sector are saying consumers are resilient but all indicators point to a recession. Investors should be mindful of the changing economy and may need to rebalance their portfolios. With an election pending, how will the Government react to what is happening?

The Business of Film: The Flash, Greatest Days, Fleabag & Inland
James Cameron-Wilson takes Simon Rose though the latest box office figures, hit by the hot weather. The new #1 is The Flash with Ezra Miller, which James enjoyed enormously. Take That jukebox musical Greatest Days with Aisling Bea is #6 while the NTLive one-day presentation of Pheobe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag was #11. James found it tragic, unpredictable & very funny and it will be on again. Indy first film Inland was #30 but, despite Mark Rylance, it left James cold.

The Bigger Picture: The need for long-term governance and inter-generational rebalancing
Gavin Oldham, director of The Share Alliance (as well as founder of Share Radio, The Share Centre and The Share Foundation) talks to Simon Rose about the need for long-term governance which, at present, is not supplied by our democratic system which produces so many career politicians. There are many issues which can only be addressed if there is more attention to a long-term focus, including inter-generational rebalancing and a more egalitarian form of capitalism. He explains why the Welsh government is leading the way in this, why Inheritance Tax needs repurposing and why AI is a great opportunity for wealth distribution.

Thought for the Week: The Rise and Fall of Honesty
'What is Truth?', were Pilate's last words to Jesus on Good Friday. We all experience being economical with the truth, although the Privileges Committee clearly regards itself as above such a challenge. The result for Boris Johnson is a trashed reputation, alongside others who have experienced a sudden fall from grace. There should, however, be a road back from outer darkness, but not without some serious self-examination first. This Is Money: Mortgage mayhem, savings frenzy: What on earth is going on?
The mortgage market is mayhem, with lenders pulling deals and rapidly hiking rates. Average fixed mortgage rates have soared over the past month and we are now at the stage where it looks a lot like the panic after the mini-Budget. At the same time savings rates are going gangbusters and there is barely a day that passes without a new best buy. Meanwhile, UK gilt yields have also leapt, sending the UK’s borrowing costs even higher. What on earth is going on? Georgie Frost, Helen Crane and Simon Lambert dive in and try to explain why the sudden inflation-driven chaos has kicked off and what borrowers and savers can do. What should you do if you need a mortgage? Is this a prime time to grab a savings deal or should you wait for better rates? How does it compare to the double-digit rates days of the 1980s? What does this mean for the economy? Are we all doomed? Or will this pass? Listen to find out their views and get tips on how to sort your mortgage and savings.
