The Upstarts: How Uber, Airbnb and the Killer Companies of the New Silicon Valley are Changing the World
Most people have either reserved a taxi using Uber or booked a room in someone's house via Airbnb. Both companies are an everyday fixture in our lives yet despite the fact that neither of them have any physical assets, they're worth billions of Dollars. The Airbnb and Uber founders belong to a new generation of tech entrepreneurs whose ambition, limitless drive and "anything's possible" attitude have earned them the nickname of "The Upstarts". That's also the name of a new book analysing the rise of such companies, and how these and other Silicon Valley organisations are changing the world. Solicitor Beverley Sunderland of Crossland Employment Solicitors on dress code discrimination
Do bosses have the right to tell their female workers what they should wear to work? The question rose to prominence in 2015 when receptionist Nicola Thorpe was sent home by her employers and told to change the flat shoes she was wearing for a pair of high heels. The publicity surrounding the case led to an inquiry and a report which concluded that while the law prevents employers from imposing dress codes on their staff, it doesn't do enough to protect employees from discriminatory practices and unsafe working conditions. Well for more analysis Juliette Foster spoke to solicitor Beverley Sunderland of Crossland Employment Solicitors.
