WTO rules against tax break given to Boeing
A tax break given to Boeing to develop a new airliner has been ruled a banned subsidy by the World Trade Organisation. The decision saw both Boeing and European rival Airbus claiming a victory in the long-running battle between the plane-makers. The WTO said Washington State gave the plane-maker a prohibited subsidy by halving the tax rate in an inducement to develop the company’s 777X airliner there. There are some new headwinds for UK airlines one way or another. Ryanair boss, Michael O’Leary, has said he expects Brexit to cost the no-frills airline 5 million passengers next year, as he predicted the UK would end up looking “pretty stupid”. Easyjet meanwhile has remained silent on market talk of a possible bid. But bucking the trend, holiday airline Jet2.com has announced plans to create almost 1000 new jobs: hiring in pilots, cabin crew, and engineers starting in September to work from eight regional airports. Is this a a savvy move or a mistake? Matt Cox has been scoping out the airline sector with John Grant, Partner at aviation data and analysis specialists MIDAS Aviation.
