In this new edition of Track Record, Sue Dougan talks to Richard Buchanan. He founded “The Clearing” ten years ago – an award-winning brand consultancy working with diverse household names such as Hugo Boss, HSBC, and Tesco. In his younger days, he studied art, then went on to join Newell & Sorrell – infamous for the ill-fated ethnic BA tailfins. That business became Interbrand, where he rose to director level. Here, he rebranded Barclays Bank, Opel /GM, British Red Cross and Orange. Richard joins Sue to talk about his journey, to fill in the gaps, and to share some life lessons along the way.
Bernardo Moya started in Spanish real estate, and twice built up property businesses before discovering neuro-linguistic programming - and more importantly, its application in business. He's built up one of the biggest businesses in this field and works in the corporate sector extensively. It's all about the 'fresh download for the brain', as he puts it! He's also a former DJ.
Graham Shaw is a former primary school teacher, turned corporate trainer and speaking expert. He’s a keen artist and amateur musician who uses his cartoons in his work (which includes major organisations such as HSBC and Specsavers) and who isn’t afraid to admit his errors when they happen.
Digital agency director Luca Senatore put himself through evening school to learn marketing, after a fractured education in his native Italy. He came to the UK unable to speak the language, and was promptly fired from his first job. Undeterred, he moved from waiter to business owner to agency founder within a few years, and now works in digital marketing serving leading retailers as director at Genie venture. He borrows from sporting philosophy for business, and his top tip for motivation and character-building is to ‘think like Superman!’ in meetings.
Heimo Hammer is a former professional footballer who’s once hung out with Bono from U2, launched one of the first live streams on the (then) fledgling internet, and designed and built his own solar-powered electric car long before Elon Musk had thought about the Tesla! He’s always had an interest in marketing and advertising, spending time working for Bates and McCann Erickson and later joining Siemens as Head of Advertising. He signs off every correspondence with ‘feel good’. He runs his own digital agency in Vienna, Kraftwerk, and is involved with the ‘Fast Forward Forum’. This is an annual event where leading fi¬nanciers, marketers, consultants, entrepreneurs and mentors discuss and predict future trends and needs.
Clive is a former director at KPMG, and following an infamous dismissal, founded Hyman Capital 14 years ago. He’s a science graduate of Cambridge University; later scored (almost 100%!) marks in his accountancy exams. He’s a keen sportsman and has recently branched out into film financing. His big tip is to listen to the customer, whatever your business. His other claim to infamy is that he was run over once by Professor Stephen Hawking.
Andy Clements is the CEO at the British Trust for Ornithology. He discusses his love of birdwatching (naturally!), an eclectic range of musical memories from many different stages of his life, and his recent foray into rowing; as well as his time spent helping to set up Natural England before joining the BTO in 2007.
Alistair McQueen is head of Savings and Retirement for Aviva plc. He's been with the organisation in its various incarnations since joining the then Commercial Union as a graduate trainee. He's a self-confessed savings geek, and urges us all to start on a pension plan if we haven't already. He's happy to confess his big business bloopers in this edition (sending confidential information in 'all-staff' email by accident!). Away from the business, he's a keen singer and runner.
Jose Hernandez is a specialist in crisis management and compliance, and has ‘rolled up his sleeves’ countless times to repair the reputations and business integrity of organisations around the world. He counts a former director of the FBI amongst his close friends and associates; he’s worked for top firms such as PwC; and loves to travel – for business and pleasure. Now a Netherlands national, he’s originally from El Salvador and has recently written of putting together ‘Broken Business’. David Clive Price is a leadership coach and consultant, linguist, author and international speaker. He’s a specialist in cultural intelligence, working with CEOs across the globe. He’s worked and lived all over the world, working variously as a speechwriter, strategist and olive farmer. He says many leaders sit in isolation at the top of their organisation. "I have been privileged to travel, live, and work in many countries around the globe. I’ve had a rich variety of diverse occupations from Cambridge Ph.D. and academic to wine and olive farmer in Italy, to international speechwriter and strategist (for one of the world’s largest banks at the time of the handover of Hong Kong to China), to adviser for a variety of multinationals, especially in Asia, to published novelist – one of my novels ‘Alphabet City’ was set in the Lower East Side of Manhattan – and travel writer. Much of my work over the past two decades has been coaching and mentoring CEOs and business leaders – especially in the area of Cultural intelligence (CQ) and global leadership." - he says.
