Ben Leonard joined HSBC as a graduate, and was an internal success story, reaching the level of former Head of Financial Institutions at HSBC. Having spent 20 years working for the organisation, he left in 2016 and went into partnership with a friend. They have launched the app FirstHomeCoach (with more related titles to follow). Listen as he talks about the change from corporation to entrepreneur, and how his house now operates the ‘one cereal at a time rule’ owing to his shift in salary!
Bernardo Moya started in Spanish real estate, and twice built up property businesses before discovering neuro-linguistic programming - and more importantly, its application in business. He's built up one of the biggest businesses in this field and works in the corporate sector extensively. It's all about the 'fresh download for the brain', as he puts it! He's also a former DJ.
Digital agency director Luca Senatore put himself through evening school to learn marketing, after a fractured education in his native Italy. He came to the UK unable to speak the language, and was promptly fired from his first job. Undeterred, he moved from waiter to business owner to agency founder within a few years, and now works in digital marketing serving leading retailers as director at Genie venture. He borrows from sporting philosophy for business, and his top tip for motivation and character-building is to ‘think like Superman!’ in meetings.
Alistair McQueen is head of Savings and Retirement for Aviva plc. He's been with the organisation in its various incarnations since joining the then Commercial Union as a graduate trainee. He's a self-confessed savings geek, and urges us all to start on a pension plan if we haven't already. He's happy to confess his big business bloopers in this edition (sending confidential information in 'all-staff' email by accident!). Away from the business, he's a keen singer and runner.
Jose Hernandez is a specialist in crisis management and compliance, and has ‘rolled up his sleeves’ countless times to repair the reputations and business integrity of organisations around the world. He counts a former director of the FBI amongst his close friends and associates; he’s worked for top firms such as PwC; and loves to travel – for business and pleasure. Now a Netherlands national, he’s originally from El Salvador and has recently written of putting together ‘Broken Business’. Listen as he talks about how reputational damage and crisis can occur in plain sight.
Julie Provino is a human resources specialist, who’s worked in the field for 20 years, and refers to what she does as being a specialist ‘in people’. She’s trained in mindfulness and NLP, and takes these disciplines seriously in her role people management and recruitment. She’s also just had a book published – ‘How Get What You Want In 7 Weeks’ – she admits this a bit tongue-in-cheek, but says it’s all about having plans and timescales in your development. She’s also CEO of her own human resources/training company and says ‘be thankful and grateful for all the lessons, and the lessons to come.’
Lucy McCarraher has always worked in publishing, founding her first publishing house whilst she was still at university. She runs her own business-focused business, Rethink Press, and founded the Business Book Awards in 2017. She’s positive about about promoting women’s business writing; she admits to some bad days and bumps in the road in her own career! She’s also worked in television production, on series as diverse as ‘Go Wild’ for children and ‘The Lover’s Guide’ – a ground-breaking series on sexual relations.
Rachel Kellett has worked in strategic planning and within education throughout her career, and is working on the new T-levels (technical levels) being rolled out from 2020. She is Head of Qualifications and Product Development at the Association of Accounting Technicians. She urges people not be afraid of ‘scaring to fail’, or who might be watching in favour of a bolder approach to career change. She’s also a keen equestrian who harbours an ambition to be a dressage judge.
Alex Moyle was an early entrepreneur – he starting selling fizzy pop to his school friends aged just 11. He says he learned the three tenets of strong sales from a tennis racket salesman (you can hear what they are in this edition of Track Record!). He later became a tennis coach and says that also laid the foundations for his career in business development – that he enjoys coaching, inspiring and helping people achieve more than they thought. He runs his own company, Alex Moyle Learning and Development and has worked with major companies on training sales teams and latterly, helping organisations develop their unique company cultures. He’s a published author and accomplished workshop leader and speaker.
Dr Andy Cope is a psychologist who has written extensively about the power of positive mood and thought and runs The Art of Brilliance, delivering workshops on the topic of ‘happy’. He lectures widely, and has worked with the workforces of some leading organisations – IKEA, DHL and Toyota among them. He favours smiley-face t-shirts rather than suits, and says that only about 2% of the population are stand out happy and positive, and that we can learn a lot from them if we allow ourselves to catch their ‘contagious poistivity’. He’s also a children’s author.
