Recently we had another case testing the rights of gig economy workers. Self-employed cycle courier Andrew Boxer took the firm Excel to an employment tribunal arguing that he was a "worker" as defined by the Employment Rights Act - therefore, should get basic rights including holiday pay and the national minimum wage. His claim was backed by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain and the employment tribunal agreed with him. To find out what rulings such as this will mean for the gig economy Georgie Frost was joined by Kevin Charles, Director of Crosslands Employment Solicitors.

According to research from Price Waterhouse Coopers up to 30% of existing UK jobs are susceptible to automation with transport, manufacturing or retail amongst the most at risk. Whilst this might boost overall productivity it does present problems for those in some of the industries at threat. From Deliveroo to Uber more and more people are getting involved in the gig economy. Whilst for many it can provide a useful income boost, thousands could be missing out on employment rights. Culture secretary Karen Bradley's referred the Fox/ Sky bid to Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority. 21st Century Fox is offering £11.7bn for the 61% stake in Sky it does not already own. The company said it was "confident" the takeover would be approved. Critics of the merger fear it will mean Rupert Murdoch has too much control of the UK media. It’s been a mixed week for the job market. The surveyor’s organisation, RICS, bemoaned the potential loss of 200,000 essential EU workers in the construction industry if Brexit bites. And on Thursday, Morgan Mckinley's London employment monitor picked up a fall in the number of jobs on offer, blaming Brexit uncertainty. A survey by Grant Thornton showed that of 5,500 businesses in 36 economies, the proportion of women in senior management has reached an all-time high of 25 per cent, up 1 percentage point from 2016, and up 6 percentage points since the survey began in 2004.
